Services Education
Education is a primary aim of Linearis Institute® / Prints&Drawings.™ As Curator-in-Charge Suleyman Nasib-Cooke recognizes, today’s education often neglects the arts, leaving a cultural void in the modern world. Understanding its obligation to contribute to society as whole, Linearis Institute strives to fill this void and to increase society’s awareness of and appreciation for the arts.
The Institute’s educational outreach encompasses three distinct dimensions:
Expert advice for collectors. For those interested in purchasing Fine Art, Linearis Institute provides in-depth consultation on the provenance, genre, period, artistic media, and investment value of particular works of art, as well as biographical information on artists, putting the works into their appropriate cultural and historical context. Experienced and beginning collectors alike appreciate the rich store of knowledge they acquire through this individualized consultation.
- Internships for students in the arts. Through its ongoing internship program, Linearis Institute enables students to gain first-hand experience in the functioning of an art institute. This exciting and unique learning opportunity benefits both the interns and Linearis Institute itself. Students from such prestigious universities as Berkeley, Harvard, and the University of Virginia have participated in programs focused on institute management and administration. They have assisted in fundraising and outreach and gained experience in the skills of framing and advising. In addition to this practical experience, the Institute introduces interns to an interdisciplinary approach to higher learning that examines the role of the arts at an international level. Participation in the Institute’s wide-ranging lectures keeps the intern’s learning experience original and exciting. These two- to three-month internships are available on a rotating basis. Applicants are interviewed to determine their interests and motivation, as well as the skills they have to offer. If accepted, they are assigned to positions based on those interests and skills. Taking advantage of current and upcoming projects, shows, and acquisitions, the Institute customizes programs to fit each intern. All interested parties who are sincerely committed to immersing themselves in the work of Fine Art are encouraged to apply.
- Lectures for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Over the years, Linearis Institute has been invited to speak to a diverse range of audiences. Scholarly presentations on individual artists and the themes of their work are a key part of the silent auctions hosted by the Institute. In addition, Curator-in-Charge Suleyman Nasib-Cooke is frequently invited to private homes to provide lectures and walk-through exhibits of the Institute’s collection.
A desire to share its extensive knowledge of art with the community makes Linearis Institute stand out among galleries. By providing educational presentations to various groups, the Institute holds true to its goal of educating society about the significance of Fine Art throughout history. Through his talks to diverse audiences—such as children of migrant workers and women CEOs—Suleyman has been able to share his knowledge. Whether the subject is the significance of color in the works of Twentieth Century French Impressionists or the role of women in the arts, these lectures always provide a beneficial and enjoyable learning experience to anyone who attends.
Presentations involve the display of actual works of art rather than simple slideshows. These works are passed around for participants to examine closely and enjoy. Materials used by artists, such as Japanese woodblocks or different types of paper, are examined as well, so that the audience is free to hold, touch, and feel the objects being discussed. With this hands-on approach, each Institute lecture becomes not simply a dry talk about a distant subject, but an actual experience in the world of Fine Art.
